Druski: Coulda Been Israel
TEL AVIV, ISRAEL— This past Tuesday, famed internet creator Drew Desbordes, known professionally as Druski, traveled to Israel for his popular recurring series, Coulda Been Auditions.
The trip was reportedly sponsored by Happy Dad, the alcohol brand Desbordes is sponsored by, and which was founded by Nelk, who themselves interviewed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this year. The video gained a record-breaking 1 billion views in just under an hour, attracting attention from all sides of the global and political spectrum.
As big fans of Coulda Been though, we must admit that the video itself was pretty lackluster. While there were some standouts—like the group of Israeli teens who claimed they wanted to be “the next New Edition,” or the episode’s most viral moment of Netanyahu coming in to show off a series of paintings he made—the episode ultimately fails to innovate on old, well-worn tropes.
For example, there’s a disappointing, and quite controversial, exchange when an Israeli woman who unfortunately happens to be thick walks in, and Druski gives his signature pervert giggle and says, “Shiiiiiiit. Where they been hiding you at lil mama?” When she reveals that they’ve been “hiding her away” in the IDF, and that she is an “ardent Zionist,” Druski replies, “What that mean? You a freak?" and starts singing “To Zion” by Lauryn Hill.
There is an unintentionally funny moment, though, when Netanyahu first walks in and Druski, not realizing who he is, roasts his haircut and tells him to, “get the fuck up outta here lil nigga.”
