It’s funny I feel the exact same way about Lil Wayne. He’s the most mediocre artist in rap. He’s never had a song, beat or even a bar that blew me away and believe me I’ve tried to understand it. He was carried to fame by the wave of much stronger southern hip hop and kept relevant by doing dogshit pop rap features and just happening to sign the two biggest rappers of the 2010’s. Worst of all he’s the type of guy that pretends to skate, which is ok if you’re 12 but he was in his early 30’s when he started that.

But everybody loves him for some reason, I don’t like Jay Z or J Cole but I understand why people love them. Wayne is just nonsense.

Yeah, no. Bob Dylan is not a great singer though I like his voice and it fits his music. What he is is one of the greatest song writers of all times. Have you read his lyrics? Perhaps you should seek out other musicians covering his work.

And your comments about Joni are totally off base. I am a guitar player and I can assure you the way she plays is truly unique. She has a fine understanding of standard harmonies as proven by her countless songs based on more standard chord progressions. But as an untrained musician she let her ears guide into modern territory using combinations of notes that don't fall neatly into our system of music theory. And the important part is that it works- it's not some random person playing random notes.

Those people who couldn't figure out how to name her chords? They were Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, two of the architects of post-bebop Jazz and who along with Charles Mingus greatly admired Joni's work.

Speaking of Mingus, go listen to her album of that name. It was originally supposed to be a collaboration with the all time great Jazz bassist, but he sadly died before the album could be made. But most of the songs on the album are Mingus compositions and I can assure you that they are no simple rock/folk melodies. There aren't many in the pop/rock world that can handle singing those melodies.

So yeah, claims of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell representing white mediocrity are ridiculous.

Oh. Nevermind, then. I guess they coffee hasn't kicked in enough you to recognize sarcasm.

Not that you need me to say it, but you are potentially correct. There are lots of super talented black musicians who never got the recognition they deserved and certainly not the financial reward. So no matter how talented Joni and Bob are they very well could have ended up working service industry jobs.
