I’m not going to lie. I’m thinking you were taking a dig at Amanda Seales (and you probably were). But I love this take on the Black activists/artists who basically use Black oppression and their knowledge of it to either showcase their Blackness or to prove how Black they are. The overcompensating is extremely obvious and performative and just very unnecessary. And it reeks of elitism because, by the end of the day, they are only using their knowledge to show how well they’re able to process information. It’s not only disingenuous but extremely draining and incredibly boring.
I usually steer of people like this because many of them are anti-Black, low key bigoted towards the LGBT+ community, and even predatory in some cases. So yeah. They’re not trying to be free.
There are soooo many people who claim to be pro Black while stepping over tons of Black bodies they don't care about cuz they weren't the right kinda Black person
When I was 16 I moved from Maryland to Memphis. Everyone was like “nah they racist down there.” “Couldn’t be me I’m scared for you.” Then I got there and realized you just don’t go the places where the confederate flags are and the white people genuinely do not want to talk to you. They will look at you musty because you live in their minds rent free and leave you tf alone. There’s so much power in having that reality. Knowing that you make an entire population clutch their pearls just because you exist. I miss it.
this essay left me thinking….what would my art look like without the oppression? it also makes me think about my art and what I’m trying to express. I always want it to come from a place that is pure, but is that possible? Ever?
It depends on how you define “pure”, I think. In my eyes, as a Black American, I don’t know that what I create will ever be able to be divorced from the legacy of American chattel slavery, simply because that is just apart of my identity. It’s literally my last name, and the only reason I’m here in this country right now. However, I think there’s always beauty in brutality, and brutality in beauty. So, 🤷🏾
Bernie Sanders supporters aren’t any different from MAGA supporters and have the same type of complete prejudice towards us Black folks. It’s just executed in a different way. They’re mostly what’s known as “Tom Sawyer White Savior” folks. They believe that Blacks need to be patronized and that we’re victims to everyone and everything and that it we become wealthy, we’ve been brainwashed by White Wallstreet. It’s the SAME attitude FDR had towards Blacks. As well as President Harrison in the 1890s.
First I was confused because of the picture of Amanda Seales and then I really got confused before I realized it was satire (I hope). There are a handful of people I would love to share this with but I’m thinking it might fly over their head, but we’ll see.
I love this! I've often wondered—what happens when life is truly free, allowing us to live in perpetual joy, ease, harmony, pleasure, and abundance? For those who are "addicted" to struggle, what will they do? Life is meant to be lived freely in all aspects, including bountiful peace, which dissolves the old world of hatred. Many don’t innerstand how they perpetuate the current narrative simply by the energy and attention they give to it. There's so much S.I.N. (self-inflicted negativity) that disrupts internal peace, which then manifests externally. This is so power-filled! ✨
I think a lot of us on the left would be more effective if we were as honest as you were in this essay and just admitted we are bougie and we like nice things but we like being “different” or “brave” for saying obvious truths like “Black Lives Matter” or displaying basic empathy towards marginalized peoples in cities where we’re hardly being inconvenienced, nonetheless receiving pushback. I love a judgmental glance from an old white lady from the UES wearing a Chanel tweed jacket on the train while I wear a Tupac shirt with his middle fingers up that I bought from Urban Outfitters and was probably made in a sweatshop in Bangladesh. Is that the extent to my activism? Pissing off old stuffy white ladies with a transgressive graphic t-shirt? I think a lot of us think we could survive the revolution but the orange clown hasn’t even been back 100 days and I’m already exhausted and tapping out.
