There’s a new beef in the world of pop culture tonight that nobody expected nor asked for.
On Friday night, pop singer Justin Timberlake stunned fans and confused just about everyone else when he took to Instagram to accuse Detroit rapper Veeze of “committing whiteface.”
In a since-deleted Instagram post (screenshotted by literally everyone), Timberlake wrote:
“It’s been a minute since I interacted with the Black community, and I planned to keep it that way. But this is where I draw the line. The hypocrisy of this community has gone on long enough.
Back in the 2000s, I took out my braids as an effort to keep the peace between myself and y’all. Now, I’m asking that you do the same. Whiteface is never okay, and Veeze should be held accountable.”
The letter to every member of the Black community came with a slideshow of pictures, including several pictures of Veeze in concert, as a baby, and a couple selfies that don’t appear on any of Veeze’s public accounts and can’t be retraced using reverse image search.
Celebrities Chime In
Jay-Z Chimes In- A rare social media appearance from Jay-Z who commented a simple, “Call me.” under JT’s post.
Meryl Streep Offends- Meryl Streep also commented, saying “I know how you feel!! #WhiteLivesMatter”
(Streep’s rep has since reached out on her behalf and apologized for the comment that was apparently made by an intern. They included a picture of her and the rapper Future side by side as further proof of her ongoing support of the Black community.)Veeze Responds (Kinda)- The rapper has yet to release an official statement, but took to Instagram stories with what appears to be a lyrical response. In a snippet of unreleased music, Veeze raps smoothly: “Made my Black girl white face like Justin Timberlake.” Pure vibes from the rapper who never finds himself in any drama.
Fan Reactions
Fans are loving it as Twitter (or X if you’re calling it that now) erupted overnight with hashtags like #Whatthehelliswhiteface and #CryMeARiverJustin trending. YouTubers are already hyping up the 30 second snippet and popular music reviewer “Professor Skye” dropped a 25- minute long YouTube video titled “Whiteface? How karma is using Veeze to get back at Justin.” A fan under the video commented, “Justin is what happens when the pot calls the kettle white. Haha. AVAA.”
We’re still a bit confused and have started to suspect that this might be a case of PUI — Posting Under the Influence. That said, three things remain true: a PUI beats a DUI, this is peak 2025, and fans are ready for more.
Heartbreaking.
