Such a calm, Black presence in a world full of blaring wealth and Whiteness. O, Black Nigga from Marriage Story, we are kindred. Your subjectivity flies off the screen.
Black Lady from Little Women. In the Whitest Movie of All Time, there you were. I seriously cannot remember what it is that you said or did, but there you were. Looking like my Auntie. Peace and love, kindred spirit on the margins.
O, Jeffrey Wright, you groundbreaker. This is your niche—being the Black person who shows up in a really good movie and makes you realize, oh wow, this movie don’t have any Black people in it. Thank you. It’s a shame you be fucking with blood diamonds, though.
Black Girl from Babygirl. What can I even say for you? You know you put the fuck on for us. Witcha’ fly ass. I love you.
John Legend. You know I don’t even fuck with you like that. But as the first Black person with lines in this 2016 movie centered around Jazz, you’ve earned your place in my heart.
This is the third movie on here that Greta Gerwig has had something to do with, and Wes Anderson would’ve been on here more by now if he actually had any Black people in his movies. We need to demand more of White People who make movies with kitschy aesthetics. I love you Stephen McKinley Henderson. (Honorable Mention: He also appears as the Black Guy in Manchester by the Sea).
The Unfriendly Black Hotties from Mean Girls. Living in a White country barbarically obsessed with the fact that it’s a White country evokes a similar feeling to the position of the Hotties, in a movie that’s about being White and is also obsessed with the fact that it’s about being White. Y’all are undeniable, ever-present, and iconic. Love.
There are no more movies in the Letterboxd and IMDb ‘Most Popular’ with Black people in it. Sorry. I wanted this to be longer, too. If you’ve ever been watching Pride and Prejudice (2005), though, and thought to yourself, “Damn it, if only this was set in Atlanta,” you just might be interested in Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta (2019).
There’s a lot of Black people in it.
“Damn it, if only this was set in Atlanta” 💀💀💀
I loveeed Sophie Wilde's character in Babygirl, she was my favourite! That movie is so crazy, and she grounds everything, I identified with her, she's also fantastic as the star in Talk To Me 🩷🩷🩷
